Nye Bevan on Conservative Plans to Destroy the NHS | Beastrabban\’s Weblog

The Beast has a knack for finding words from the past that apply to the present. Here he quotes Aneurin Bevan, who discussed the burning desire by Conservatives to deprive UK citizens of free medicine many years before Jeremy Hunt was born to blight the system.

At one point in its creation, the amount spent on the new NHS exceeded the initial estimates. Churchill seized on this to try and discredit the whole scheme. Bevan says of this in In Place of Fear:

The first few Estimates for the Health Service seemed to justify the critics. Expenditure exceeded the Estimates by large amounts, and Mr Churchill with his usual lack of restraint plunged into the attack. In this he showed less insight than his colleagues, who watched his antics with increasing alarm. They knew the Service was already popular with the people. If the Service could be killed, they wouldn’t mind, but they would wish it done more stealthily and in such a fashion that they would not appear to have responsibility.

And this is what is going on now, with the piecemeal privatisation of the NHS. 95 Tory and Lib Dem MPs in the last government had ties to private healthcare firms seeking to benefit from the NHS denationalisation. And my guess that privatisation is one of the motives for this assault on junior doctors. It’s to get rid of determined opposition to privatisation from within the medical profession itself. I also wonder if the aim isn’t also to drive doctors out of the NHS, and into private companies, which can then be employed in NHS contracts.

This must be stopped. Defend the NHS. Support the junior doctors.

Few, if any, people doubt the fact that the Tories are trying to smash the NHS beyond repair, so however much they try to evade it they will get the blame. The hard-line Tories have always hated the NHS, but strangely I have come across several Tory supporters who say they support the NHS (perhaps they are only saying it because they know any other view would be massively unpopular, I don’t know). I believe Hunt has actually put into print and published his opposition to the NHS. The Tory hatred for the NHS is a clear sign of the contempt in which they hold the vast majority of people in this country and how, as long as they are alright, they couldn’t care less about the rest of us. They are despicable.

Couldn’t have said it better myself, unfortunately we have a corrupt uncaring government full of self interest instead of caring and protecting the most vulnerable in our society and we must stand and be counted to protect our NHS and all we hold dear. Junior doctors are the tip of the iceberg and we have to be looking continually at what try are planning next, for we cannot trust them.
