Fraud fears over proposed Land Registry privatisation

Last Updated: June 1, 2016By

This, from The Times, was spotted on Twitter:
160601 land registry fraud fears
This Writer wonders whether these concerns are similar to those raised by the Open Data Institute and publicised by the Financial Times almost a month ago:

Britain’s property ownership registry could be open to fraud and manipulation if privatised, the organisation set up by David Cameron to promote transparency has warned.

The Open Data Institute, established by the government in 2012, is concerned that a commercial operator would charge for access to the database.

“We’re concerned around what happens to the data that the Land Registry holds if it shifts from something we get for free to something we have to pay for,” said Jeni Tennison, technical director and deputy director of the ODI.

“We’d need to think about fraud,” she said. “Can we trust the people maintaining that data not to change it?”

That is an important question. Where is the Conservative Government’s answer?

The Infrastructure Act 2015 schedules 3 and 5 hand over a hugely improved income stream to the Land Registry as well as unprecented power to developers. Who wrote the Infrastructure Bill, in real life? Advisors from the relevant industries and potential buyers of the Land Registry? I think it is possible the entire Act was written and designed to defraud the taxpayer.

Yes, very good points albeit belated. These reservations are probably promoted by the amount of corruption that is rife when Government flog off national assets and institutions to friends in low places. The fact that even the Law Society can smell a potential rat does reflect badly on this corrupt Government. Cons record in this area has been totally untrustworthy and these lying low lifes will do everything to promote their believed elite status in totally ruling the UK for their own personal benefit. Private Eye has struggled to find property ownership details from the system as it stands so one can only imagine there will be no chance of openess and transparency once the bad boys get their feet through the door. Maybe after being sold off lots of unregistered land will suddenly be finding houses being built on them. I feel much more comfortable with this valuable institution remaining as a National asset not in the hands of yet another grubby sell off. Is this the same Cons who want to root out corruption, tax evasion, off shoring and introducing a new openess and transparency into our way of life……another promised non-event.
