The new Personal Independence Payment continues to cause controversy.

Here, it seems a woman with severe agoraphobia (fear of open spaces) is being penalised.

A woman who says she will not leave her house due to a ‘severe’ fear of open spaces claims to have had her disability benefits cut from an average of £250 a week to £110.

Irene Chegwin, of Broom Avenue, Leigh, says she faces a bleak 2017 after the £307 a month Disability Living Allowance she has received for the past 20 years was axed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

The 59-year-old claims that this has led to a double financial whammy with her husband Stephen, 50, resultantly losing a £250 per month carer’s allowance he was in receipt of for looking after his wife.

Outrageous and utterly disgusting. I suffer with social phobia and dread meeting people when I go out. I avoid going places unless I can insure my isolation by being in my own car. Otherwise I cannot do going out at all.

Yes indeed. These people always crop up whenever a benefit claimant is treated harshly.

It is a problem in today’s society, people “think” they “see” people cheating benefits, one commenter “thinks” they’ve seen the lady round car boot sales in the local area, same goes for “seeing” homeless people hanging around town centre bus stations drinking alcohol and being aggressive.
Tax evading businesses and the like that cost much more are “unseen” therefore do not get the attention they rightly deserve.

That’d be a hell of a comment, wouldn’t it? “I saw HSBC giving tax avoidance advice to millionaires! Sanction that bank at once!”

Phobia is not mental illness unless comorbid with mania psychotic or personality disorder, Agoraphobia as many others are classed as present distress and not life long mental illness, with depression it can take lives.Search anxiety ,
