Humiliated Tories change Bedroom tax after court defeat – proving they can be beaten

Last Updated: March 4, 2017By

After a three-year fight, the law will finally protect families like Paul and Sue Rutherford – who care for disabled grandson Warren (pictured with Labour’s Rachel Reeves).

This story proves that the Conservative Government can be defeated – if good people have the courage to stand up and fight for their rights.

It also raises an important question:

What budget did the DWP use to fight the case? The benefits budget? If so, it isn’t paying out £50 billion in benefits, is it?

Inquiring minds want to know how the government is paying all these court costs.

The Tory government has made a humiliating legal climbdown over the Bedroom Tax after defeat in the Supreme Court.

In a victory for campaigners, ministers have finally confirmed all parents who need an extra room for their disabled child’s carer will be spared the hated charge.

They will also allow an extra room for all couples who cannot share a bedroom due to a physical disability.

The government was forced into the move by two families who won a three-year legal fight in England’s highest court in November.

Paul and Sue Rutherford launched their case for grandson Warren, 17, who needs round-the-clock care for rare chromosomal disorder Potocki-Shaffer syndrome.

Jacqueline Carmichael, 44, has spina bifida and a special bed her husband and full-time carer Jayson cannot share.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) spent £100,000 of taxpayer cash fighting the case, but this week ministers permanently rewrote the law to comply with the judgement. The changes will take effect on April 1.

The Tories should be made responsible for the costs of this, not the taxpayer!

The costs totalled over £200,000 Mike, as far as I’m aware. Which makes it worse. Ought never have had to go so far in my opinion. But the tories will rarely back down.

At last some sense prevails and a good win for the disabled everywhere. Hope this brings a little uplift to all those feeling down trodden and the will to carry on.
