‘Leftie luvvie comedian’ beats politician in row over racist rant
This Writer has been following the dialogue between Matt Lucas, who was recently brilliant in BBC Wales’s Doctor Who, and David Davies, who is a dead loss as a Conservative MP for Wales.
The discussion was about the Metropolitan Police’s claim that it would have to prioritise crime investigations, due to Conservative government funding cuts.
I have already reported on this, emphasizing concerns that it would turn most people affected by criminal behaviour into “second-class crime victims”.
Mr Davies decided to use the story to attack people who struggle with English.
He didn’t stand a chance – and rightly so.
Here’s how The Canary reported it:
Little Britain star Matt Lucas has called Conservative MP David Davies “racist” after the Tory MP sent out a tweet about the use of interpreters by the police.
Davies wrote:
appalling & discriminatory suggestion. Police could save fortune by not paying 4 interpreters 4 non English speakers https://t.co/WP16xUFh3f
— David TC Davies MP 🏴🇬🇧 (@DavidTCDavies) August 25, 2017
Davies was referring to a suggestion by the Metropolitan police force deputy commissioner Craig Mackey. Mackey said that victims whose first language isn’t English could get face-to-face visits from the police while, due to cuts, others may not in the future.
Mr Lucas responded:
Fortunately we don't need a translator to tell us how fascistic this sounds https://t.co/9zV0gq2tyI
— Matt Lucas HQ (@RealMattLucas) August 26, 2017
The exchange swiftly descended into insults:
Lefty luvvie comedian without a clue about the real world.
— David TC Davies MP 🏴🇬🇧 (@DavidTCDavies) August 26, 2017
Racist MP https://t.co/hP7TpeFGsK
— Matt Lucas HQ (@RealMattLucas) August 26, 2017
But the point was made, as others rushed to agree with the actor:
@DavidTCDavies As an ex police colleague of yours, I find your lack of respect for diversity appalling TBH.

Just to be very clear – this certainly is not @Conservatives agenda – many of us are appalled at this suggestion by individual MP

With Anne Marie Morris already suspended from the Conservative Party for using a racist word, isn’t it justifiable to ask for Mr Davies to be reprimanded as well?

Tory ‘speak’ is so ingrained they think it is normal and acceptable to abuse the electorate. Since when have they redrawn the social map of Britain. Arrogant, self obsessed with power, all of them, and Matt’s right, they are illiterate, illiterate to truth.
I’ve made the point before that not all politicians think before they speak. Was he down the pub when these words came out? After a few pint, it might seem a way to save some money but I’d like to think I’d get an interpreter in a foreign country, when needed.
I’m not sure this is racist though. That word is bandied about so much that it isn’t an insult anymore.
Was the policeman racist, in wanting to give priority to non English speakers ?
