More council houses? From TORIES? Shurely shome mishtake?
If this is accurate, then the Tories will be backtracking on a pillar of their policy since the 1980s – that councils should have less housing stock.
Does Theresa May have any hard-and-fast policies, other than doing everything she can to stay in power?
Theresa May is being urged to face down a potential backlash from backbench Conservatives and sign off proposals aimed at forcing councils to unleash a building boom to tackle Britain’s housing crisis.
The Department for Communities and Local Government has confirmed to the Guardian that it will publish details by the end of this month of how local authorities should assess the need for housing.
The plans, part of a package of housing measures, will be closely watched as a test of the prime minister’s appetite for enacting controversial domestic reforms.
They were slated for publication in July, and a press release drafted, but the launch was delayed at the last minute amid concerns some MPs could face criticism from constituents concerned about over-development.

Probably only doing it in order that they can sell them off to their friends and then rent therm out at extortionate rates.
Ah! wondered why Ruthie was saying that her lot would build 25,000 social houses a year in Scotland. Obviously the boss said it was OK.
over developement? oh. you mean of houses built to buy only. far as i can see theres no other overdevelopement, especially none in the rental section of the housing market. ad especially not as far as social housing is concerned(council/housing associations. other local authorities etc)
Welcome news but there will be a catch. Mrs May does nothing for the good of the community or for those less fortunate.
Will they give councils back the money that Thatcher took?
This is definitely ‘one to waatch’!
“Constituents concerns about over-development”? That’s one of the worst euphemisms for social cleansing heard to date.
