Never mind Corbyn: Right-wing press have forgotten that a TORY actually sold secrets to Communists

Raymond Mawby.

While papers like The Sun, the Daily Mail and the Telegraph are busy spreading libels about a connection between Jeremy Corbyn and Czech spies, let’s all spare a thought for a late MP who was a real spy for Czechoslovakia: Conservative Raymond Mawby.

The current Czech Republic security service – yes, the same organisation that has flatly denied any involvement by Mr Corbyn in espionage for that country – confirmed to the BBC in 2012 that the late Mr Mawby had spied for the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic during the Cold War, using the code name ‘Laval’.

He passed handwritten floor plans of the Prime Minister’s office in the House of Commons to his paymasters, along with details of security arrangements. He promised to ask questions on behalf of the Czechoslovakian security service, handed over lists of parliamentary committees and details about his fellow politicians.

He was never caught. He acted as assistant Postmaster General from 1963-4, and only lost his Parliamentary seat through deselection due to boundary changes in 1983. He died in July 1990.

‘Laval’ was paid £100 for each snippet of information he passed on – equivalent to £1,530 at 2012 prices.

Isn’t it silly of the Tory-supporting press to be accusing Mr Corbyn, when the UK politician who was known to be a spy for Communist Czechoslovakia was much closer to their home?

Labour’s deputy leader, Tom Watson, has accused the Tory-supporting papers of fabricating a story about Mr Corbyn to boost their plummeting sales figures.

Mr Corbyn has made his own thoughts clear:

Add to that Sub-Lieutenant David Bingham, a paid up member of the Tory Party who, in 1971 sold Naval Secrets to the Soviet Union.
