Theresa May missed her chance to unite the country over Brexit | New Statesman

Last Updated: March 2, 2018By

Missed it? She tried – energetically – to make the divisions worse!

Theresa May is the leader of a divided party and a divided country. In her speech on Brexit… [she conceded] that she has failed to unite them. “We must bring our country back together,” May [said], “taking into account the views of everyone who cares about this issue, from both sides of the debate”.

After a divisive referendum (52-48), it is natural and wise to forge unity. But in her 20 months as prime minister, May has repeatedly failed to do so.

Trapped between her party’s demands and those of Parliament, May is now left to helplessly plead for unity having only practiced division.

I thought that she did surprisingly well. What would you have her do? Had the result been the reverse and the Remain side won by 52% to 48%, what concessions would, or could have been made to the leavers? Furthermore, leaving the Customs Union and Single Market were the only points on which BOTH sides of the Referendum Campaign were in agreement. I’m struggling to see what people think what else she could have done.

Tories never want to unite the country, they thrive on division and confrontation. Divide and Rule has always been their way.

I agree; this is a wound that will never heal, unless we, the people, are given a proper education about the E.U., what it is, how it works, what it does, what it’s supposed to do, what its intentions are, a proper history, the lies, the dirty tricks, the ineptitude of politicians, the betrayal, what we were forced to give up. Once people know the truth, people will be able to make an informed decision. Too much of what is discussed in the media is political point scoring, which is filtering down to the electorate. People need to be educated in this regard but when were the people of this nation given the respect to be even considered when our politicians decided to embark in this voyage.
I have my opinion and others may have theirs and I will respect them, when they have armed themselves with information. I want people to find out about this organisation so that they can make their decisions independent of the political nonsense; to know what is in the treaties and who made the decisions, why we were not consulted, what we have lost and what we have yet to lose, contrasted with what we have gained and may gain. We signed up to treaties within which are things yet to come into play. Those who think that they were voting for the status quo could not be more wrong, similarly, those who voted to leave need to know what they were voting against. when we all have a greater understanding of this thing, we MIGHT have a chance of bridging the chasm between those of us who voted to remain and those of us who voted to leave. Even if we don’t agree, we will be more respectful of one another and of our respective positions however it is up to us and us alone to educate ourselves and not to merely swallow what our politicians feed us.
