Terrorism police listed Extinction Rebellion as extremist. Why does Boris Johnson get off the hook?

According to official advice to the police, John, 92, who was arrested for protesting about climate change outside the Cabinet Office, should be treated in the same way as terrorists who want to blow it up.

I don’t think I can put this better than George Monbiot already has:

I wonder if Greta Thunberg, who changed her Twitter handle to “Sharon” after a mistake by a contestant on Celebrity Mastermind, will now change it to “Terrorist Sharon” as a result of this deliberate directive?

Here’s The Guardian:

Counter-terrorism police placed the non-violent group Extinction Rebellion (XR) on a list of extremist ideologies that should be reported to the authorities running the Prevent programme, which aims to catch those at risk of committing atrocities, the Guardian has learned.

The climate emergency campaign group was included in a 12-page guide produced by counter-terrorism police in the south-east titled Safeguarding young people and adults from ideological extremism, which is marked as “official”.

XR featured alongside threats to national security such as neo-Nazi terrorism and a pro-terrorist Islamist group. The guide, aimed at police officers, government organisations and teachers who by law have to report concerns about radicalisation, was dated last November.

So there you have it.

As far as the UK’s police services are concerned, caring for the environment is an extremist ideology whose adherents should be treated as though they are terrorists.

Conversely, a lunatic who supports fracking, who supports the UK’s dependence on fossil fuels, and who (if reports are correct) has been ordered to ignore the reality of climate change if he wants a (toxic) trade deal with Donald Trump, is just fine and dandy to be our prime minister.

We live in a time of madness.

On a related note, XR posters have appeared in our town stuck on empty buildings and so on. All the ones saying “There’s no Brexit on a dead planet” have been torn down. The town voted 65% Leave.
I’m beginning to think extinction is too kind for the human race.

I don’t know about groups and organizations per se, but there are apparently all sorts of innocuous factors taken into consideration when deciding if individuals have the potential to be extremists or terrorists, including views and opinions on Environmentalism, as well as things like Religious/Spiritual beliefs, animal Rights/animal welfare, veganism, vegetarianism, Political views, and belief or interest in UFOs! I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a file on myself. Being a member of CND or Greenpeace would probably go against you too, or anything like that, Friends of the Earth, League Against Cruel Sports, Hunt sabs. Possibly even membership of the Labour party, or Momentum or the SWP would be enough to flag you up. Basically anything that the Establishment sees as a threat.

The file in me is probably quite thick by now (as, I expect, is the person compiling it).

I’d not heard about the Sharon thing. That’s hilarious. As they say, this “actress” is the missing lovechild of Vicky Pollard and it tells us all we need to know about celebrity culture. She’d be a celebrity for being thick, even without Casualty!

Hey, let’s not insult these people for simple, silly mistakes. We all make them.

I don’t think the police have ever changed, when I used to go on protests and CND marches in the 70s my mother always told me to beware of the police as they got violent with protesters. She said she’d seen them riding horses into crowds and hitting people with truncheons.

If I call you an ‘extremist”, I am saying that your ideas are at an extreme distance from mine.

By implication, the reverse is simultaneously true; my ideas are at an extreme distance from yours.

About as useful as the words democrat, racist, freedom, Nazi, anti-Semite, left, right etc. etc.

Global warming + over-production + over-population are problems caused by the (Moderate? You must be joking!) Centre.

There are problems facing humanity; there are solutions to those problems which come from the whole spectrum of politics.

The terms Left + Right are to do with where representatives sat in the Convention during the French Revolution, and have become the mantra of the ossified Left + Right (damn! I’ve just done it myself!) (Self-criticism there for them as expects it!)

In Denmark, a Leftist Party got elected on a rightist anti-immigration platform.
(Read Neo-Con ‘Gatestone’ for archived accounts of the problems Scandinavia + Germany are having with some immigrants + their fascistic (!) theocratic ideologies.)

(Personally, I subscribe to Mondoweiss + The Electronic Intifada as well)

The old party mythologies will not see us through the perfect storm that is already here!

    Regards
