Private employment agencies are making a killing by paying nurses a pittance

What do you think of this little racket?

Remember when the Conservative government introduced privatisation into NHS procurement? It means the health service in England can hire nurses from private agencies.

There is a shortage of nurses, meaning that agencies like Thornbury Nursing can pretty much ask whatever price they fancy, and NHS England will have to pay.

The agency then pays its nurses less than half of what it charged the NHS – making the work unattractive to all but those who are most desperate for cash, and perpetuating the staffing crisis.

Here’s the punchline: Thornbury Nursing is run by a private equity fund owned by a major donor to the Conservative Party.

I’m not saying this person pulled strings to ensure that a situation developed from which they could profit.

I don’t have any information either way.

But if that isn’t what’s happening, why doesn’t this company either lower its charge, or increase the amount it pays its nurses?

I wonder if they are doing the same with teaching staff? I notice an Agency putting out recruitment ads for teachers in Powys.

From other comments on Facebook, I understand that they are indeed doing the same with teaching staff.

Agencies have been doing this for years. i would never hire from an agency if i could find, say , a cleaner that was independent. I found out about the agency owners sitting on their backsides while raking in wads of cash and paying a pittance to those who did the hard work, 24 yrs ago after being in hospital for a major operation and being told i hadn’t to do any housework for x number of weeks and not vac for 6 months. first week lift no more than half a kettle of water. living on my own back then i desperately needed a cleaner. but i was not paying 6 quid an hour for the owner to get 3/4 of that n the worker a quarter. 2 quid for an hours work even back then was diabolical. i managed best i could and an old lady i was friends with did the vaccin on the Friday evening when she visited me.. luckily i had a good few friends who helped in different ways. bringing in milk/cat food & cat litter. for my 2 cats and groceries if i needed them.or took me to the supermarket n they carried the bags. i now have to have a cleaner and trying to find one thats independent is a nightmare, as is gardeners/DIY people etc.its time these agencies were stopped. and jobs once again displayed at job centres because the agencies seem to hog all the good jobs(or what would be if the worker got the proper wage. ) another way to keep us all down????

This has been the case for at least 30 years but unfortunately the MSM thought that the nurses were getting the money charged and created the myth of the “lucrative private jobs market”.
