A third of Sure Start family centres have been closed amid ignorance about their users
Wow.
This Writer can’t tell what’s worse – the fact that nearly 1,300 family centres that provided vital clinics, along with health and parenting support, saving the NHS £5 million a year…
Or the ignorance from the Tory supporters commenting on it.
The charity Action for Children has said Sure Start centres are often the first place where abuse and neglect can be detected.
But commenters on the Daily Mirror story about the closure focused instead on their own prejudices.
One said Sure Start centres were not used by the families for whom they were intended. When another asked how they would know, they didn’t bother to respond.
Another indicated they were pleased the vital centres were being closed as they were “a breeding ground for single mothers and potential Labour voters”.
Responding to the report’s statement that Labour’s Angela Rayner had used one as a single mother in the North West, the same commenter stated: “Answer, don’t become a single ‘mom’.”
These people seem to think the Sure Start was responsible for turning people into single parents!
They seem proud to parade their ignorance: there are many reasons people may become single parents but they seem to assume that it is a lifestyle choice. Where’s their research to support that?
Isn’t it more likely that the Tories have simply removed a service that would have helped the vast majority of children, in the belief that it would save a few pennies.
Note that I’m not saying the belief is true – in fact, evidence suggests the opposite is more likely.
But with the Tories, it’s always about money.
