What we voted for: Conservative rule is harming your children’s health

Tories harm children: that’s the meaning of the report.

If you know anybody at work or on your street who voted Tory, ask them why they hate kids and want to hurt them.

A report by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has stated that health outcomes for UK children from disadvantaged backgrounds are now up to four times worse than for the children of the super-rich.

That’s a direct result of Conservative government policies over the last 10 years.

The report states that, in a development “rarely seen in high-income countries”, “progress has stalled, or is in reverse”. That’s right – Tory government is reversing health improvements for children that have been made over recent decades.

Deep cuts in local authority budgets that fund public health initiatives and community services means progress has been seriously affected.

There has been a shocking rise in children’s mental illness and an increased number of child suicides.

A Tory government means children killing themselves. Think about that.

Poverty has been included as a health indicator.

And infant mortality has worsened.

Put all these elements together and we see that the UK has fallen behind comparably wealth countries – and all the jingoism in the world won’t change the fact.

Anybody who still says this is the best country in the world is talking through their posterior.

You can read the full report here. I’m sure you’ll be able to find even more upsetting statistics in it.

And I’m sure we’re all looking forward to the moment the first damned fool tries to ignore the findings on the basis that the RCPCH are a bunch of lefties.

Child health in reverse, life expectancy in reverse, poverty and inequality growing, foodbank use growing, mental illness growing, suicides growing, homelessness growing, A&E waiting times growing, a dysfunctional Social Security system, and half the country under water…..welcome to Tory Britain.

Lots of good points here. Especially about the myth of being “the best country in the world”. Perhaps a lot of Britons stay in this country because we don’t speak any other languages so we HAVE to stay, being unable to cope anywhere else. We shouldn’t forget the huge, post-war emigration of young people from here to live in Australia, New Zealand, Canada etc. Not to mention nearly a million, often older ,Britons, who choose to live in Spain , France etc.

But I also like the approach of putting these issues directly (or, possibly, more subtly)
to actual Tory voters. Professional politicians, including Labour, are too keen to present Tory policies as the cruel product of some small, unknown force that seems to have just appeared in Parliament. This is dishonest. We must make it clear that votes have consequences.
Those new Tory voters in former Labour seats were heading Tory-wards anyway. They did not “lend” their votes to the Tories over one issue. Vote Tory.Get Tory. They must have calculated that they wanted Brexit so much , they were prepared to sacrifice the economy and their children’s future, as well as the NHS, to get their way.

A neighbour of my daughters, facing an operation, unable to work, has faced a nightmare trying to get Benefits. His conclusion (you guessed it) is that the immigrants get preferential treatment. In a way, it is the only explanation that is available to “the man in the street who reads the tabloids”.

But he had no answer when I told him that he voted for this when he voted Tory (which, of course, he had done) I sympathised with his position, but warned him that he had voted for another 5 years of this. And that the Tories had always promised to take a hard line over claiming Benefits. Sometimes, it seems that people vote Tory assuming that their cruelty is only reserved for somebody else.
We have to criticise the Tories but always try to check who people actually voted for!
