The apologists: Tories leap in to make themselves ridiculous over Islamophobia
When is Islamophobia not Islamophobia? When a Tory MP is trying to justify what another Tory MP has said, it seems.
After Lee Anderson’s Tory Party membership was suspended because he claimed Sadiq Khan had ceded the streets of London to Islamists, the official Tory line has been that what he said was wrong – factually inaccurate – and that he should have apologised. But his words were not Islamophobic.
That position has hardened – a little.
PM is hardening the Conservatives' line a little on Lee Anderson this morning. Before, the position was he was suspended because he didn't apologise.
Today Sunak said the comments were unacceptable and wrong "and that's why he had the whip suspended". No mention of an apology

But the clear Islamophobia of Anderson’s comments, which came after Commons Speaker Lyndsay Hoyle claimed (without evidence) that he had been told Muslims had threatened the lives of MPs, has been glossed over by Sunak and others:
Georgey Spanswick(Radio York): Has the Tory Party got islamophobic tendencies?
Rishi Sunak: "No, of course it doesn't… " 👀 pic.twitter.com/mH4hONRsQQ

Mark Harper(Transport Secretary) refuses to call Lee Anderson's comments racist#KayBurley: Was what he said racist?
MH: It was wrong… wrong is a strong word
KB: Was it racist what he said?
MH: I'm not going to get into a detailed analysis of what he said pic.twitter.com/d0x2GoPUOj

Jon Kay: What message does it send to the UK's Muslim communities that Tory Party leadership is talking about Lee Anderson getting back in.. less than 48 hours after suspending him?
Mark Harper: "We don't tolerate people saying such things in the Tory Party" 🤔#BBCBreakfast pic.twitter.com/s6SEsb1yFr

Also glossed over was Liz Truss’s apparent support for Tommy Robinson (do I need to explain who he is?) after he was name-checked on a US political commentary show:
"I don't know whether Liz heard what was said"
Conservative deputy chair Rachel Maclean says former PM Liz Truss may not have been "aware" what was said when Tommy Robinson was branded a "hero" by Steve Bannon#PoliticsLive https://t.co/xe0CHIXvsD pic.twitter.com/n017bhGPLb

Fortunately, others take a somewhat more robust view of what constitutes Islamophobia:
If this had been antisemitism, no amount of sorry would have sufficed. Saying Lee Anderson should've just said 'sorry' demonstrates double standards & hierarchy of hate in Tory Party. Sadiq Khan is abused as 'islamist' 'extremist' aka terrorist because he's Muslim (Islamophobia)… pic.twitter.com/5mXb6AoBG4

This is absolute nonsense Kemi and you know it.
I met you alongside other colleagues over a year and a half ago and the definition was explained to you in detail – you were asked to detail your concerns / any objections and the basis of it .
You DID NOT follow up.
Instead all… https://t.co/fMupIlAxWo— Sayeeda Warsi (@SayeedaWarsi) February 26, 2024
It seems Sunak and the others are walking a tightrope over this issue because Anderson’s words are representative of the feelings of a majority of people in the Parliamentary Conservative Party. So, when he has been denying Islamophobia in his party, was he actually lying?
Sam Coates on why Tory leadership won't call what Lee Anderson said racist.
"They have suspended Lee Anderson, but they can't go too far condemning him, because of the backlash from their own side."#KayBurley pic.twitter.com/4jbuj9YuKV

It’s irritating that representatives of Labour – who kicked off this wave of Islamophobia in the first place – have picked up on this:
#KayBurley: Do you think Lee Anderson's comments were racist?
Anneliese Dodds: "They were unambiguously racist, islamophobic, divisive & damaging… & we see Tory MPs rallying around him… & Sunak seems to be too weak to deal with that problem." pic.twitter.com/Vkt4Qe7bhr

And let’s not forget those other irritants – the media pundits. Some of them have been resurrecting the hoary old lie that the chant, “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” is a Muslim call for genocide of Israel (in fact it’s nothing of the sort, although apparently a propaganda campaign – by Israel in the 1960s – has succeeded in persuading the TV idiots to think otherwise:
.@JewishCurrents: The claim “from the river to the sea” carries a genocidal intent relies not on the historical record, but on racism & Islamophobia. These Palestinians, the logic goes, cannot be trusted—even if they are calling for equality, their real intention is extermination https://t.co/oA4ub6nEqZ

The threat of Islamophobia is fabricated.
The threat of fear – stoked by Islamophobic comments – is entirely real.
The threat to you is not Islamists or Muslim terrorists. The threat to you is coming from Conservative and Labour politicians who are filling the media with nonsense in the hope that you believe them. Do you?
