Were the Tories really going to spend £10 billion on Rwanda?

Is the Rwanda money wrangle more Tory incompetence?

Is the Rwanda money wrangle more Tory incompetence? See what you think.

You see, back when Priti Patel (or whoever it was) originally negotiated the deal to send refugees and other people arriving in the UK in small boats to Rwanda, it seems she agreed to pay millions of pounds to the government of that country for the privilege.

But it seems she also neglected to include a clause in the agreement that if nobody ended up being deported there, Rwanda would have to give the money back.

And now, after Keir Starmer said the Rwanda plan is “dead and buried”, the government of Rwanda is refusing to give back any of the cash:

A spokesperson for Rwanda’s government told the country’s state television: “Let this be clear, paying back the money was never part of the agreement.”

Alain Mukuralinda said the agreement “did not stipulate” money should be refunded and that the UK had approached Rwanda and requested a partnership, which was “discussed extensively”.

The new Labour government has expressed the hope that some of the money can be recouped.

But don’t hold your breath waiting!

It’s just money that’s been created by the Bank of England. Doesn’t need to be paid back. Just written off.
