The Labour government has offered striking medical staff more money to go back to work, but will a 22 per cent pay rise be enough for junior doctors?
The new deal has been worked out between the government and the British Medical Association and consists of a four per cent backdated pay rise for 2023-24, on top of an existing increase worth an average of nine per cent for the same financial year, with an extra six per cent increase offered for 2024-25.
We’re being told that this brings the total to an average of 22 per cent for every junior doctor [pictured on strike earlier this year]. This Writer can only see 19 per cent, though. I’m wondering if the extra is due to some kind of compounding – that, once the 13 per cent for 2023-24 is added to current salaries, a six per cent increase on the result will make the total a 22 per cent rise on the original figure.

Even taken at its highest, the offer is less than two-thirds of what junior doctors were demanding when they started striking, and that was a few years ago.
But the BMA is recommending the offer to junior doctors.
This Writer would suggest that junior doctors demand an agreement to bring their pay up to parity with its 2010 level over time, in addition to what’s currently being offered.
Other than that, we could be looking at a new government bringing a swift end to a dispute the former government prolonged needlessly for two years and 11 strikes. If the resolution is this easy, then it is the Tories who are responsible for delays in treatment.
