Should MPs be banned from lying?

Should MPs be banned from lying?

Should MPs be banned from lying? Some of the worst excesses of the former (Tory) government were due to MPs telling falsehoods in Parliament, so this question from pressure group 38 Degrees comes at a most opportune moment.

I hand you straight across to the message from 38 Degrees:

Public trust in politicians is at rock bottom. Recent events have shown just how damaging lies and disinformation can be – stoking division, sparking riots and creating chaos. [1] It’s terrifying.

Politicians are our highest elected officials, so while it’s terrible to not be told the truth by your friends or family, political lies from people in positions of power and those running our country have much greater consequences. But right now, it’s NOT illegal for our politicians to intentionally lie to the public. [2] That’s not okay.

Rebuilding public trust requires real action. Deliberate deception from MPs must be met with REAL repercussions. The Government in Wales has recently committed to ban deliberate lying by candidates and members of the Welsh Parliament. Now is the time to push the Prime Minister to do the same in Westminster. [3]

If you’re sick and tired of some rogue MPs telling dangerous and deliberate lies to the public, will you add your name to the petition today to ban lying in the UK Parliament?

Lies were told during the Brexit campaign. [4] Lies were told during Partygate. [5] Politicians are constantly accusing each other of misrepresenting the truth, but those accused of lying can get away with it as they hide behind parliamentary privilege. [6] The public has had enough. [7]

Deliberate deception from politicians damages our democracy. Although the vast majority of MPs are truthful and act with the integrity we expect from our elected representatives, it’s wrong that our system doesn’t hold accountable those who knowingly deceive the people who voted them into office.

So, if you want to tell Prime Minister Keir Starmer to take action against deliberate lying in politics, will you add your name to the petition today? It only takes 30 seconds to join the campaign:

almost every person sitting in Parliament are born liars, deceivers, fraudsters abd corrupt. They are not there to serve us, but to serve themselves and those that bribe them. They make sure that they are safe from prosecution.Parliamentary priviledge must be removed from these lying, thieving, corrupt crooks…They must be held to account for any wrong doing, by lengthy prison sentences as a warning to others!
