Starmer will remain unpopular until he accepts the reasons for it

Is Keir Starmer targeting specific MPs after the winter fuel payments rebellion?

It seems only some Labour Parliamentarians are to be penalised because of the latest challenge to their leader’s power, prompting This Writer to ask: is Keir Starmer targeting specific MPs after the winter fuel payments rebellion?

We are being told that party whips are saying anyone who failed to back Rachel ‘Freeze’ Reeves’s plan to strip pensioners of money they need in order to keep warm this winter – rather than just taxing the richest on a tiny fraction of their wealth – will be penalised.

But Labour is also saying only 12 out of the 50 MPs who abstained in last week’s vote did not have permission, and it is widely believed that the actual number was much higher.

Doesn’t this suggest that Starmer is once again playing ‘favourites’ – and that the hammer will more than likely fall on MPs showing left-wing tendencies as the leader drags Labour even further towards fascism?

In a letter to the rebels, Government whips have said the MPs’ future behaviour is being ‘monitored’, and they will be denied privileges.

This includes losing any potential help to secure places on House of Commons select committees.

It has also emerged that whips warned Labour MPs they were not allowed to discuss the Winter Fuel vote nor its aftermath with journalists.

And the response has stirred up anger in the backbenches, according to the Daily Express:

One of the rebel MPs has now blasted his party’s response to the row, telling the Guardian that the government has misjudged the depth of anger around the policy.

They slammed: “Quite frankly, the letter is feudal and completely misplaced when people are abstaining to protect very vulnerable people.”

We know that Jon Trickett actively voted against the plan, so he’ll be on the punishment list. I wonder who else will be – and what they will do about it?
