With a Labour government people had a right to expect better so why is the minimum wage rise still not enough?
This Writer is glad to see that the mainstream media – has stopped lying that it is a “living” wage, because it isn’t one. The official title is still the National Living Wage, so the government needs to re-phrase it.
According to the Resolution Foundation, which calculates the amount that families need in order to make ends meet (overseen by the Living Wage Commission), the living wage for 2024-25 is £12.60 per hour outside London, and £13.85 per hour in the capital.

But Labour’s minimum wage rise takes it to only £12.21 for people aged over 21 – and only from April 2025, by which time the £12.60 figure will be out of date.
For people aged 18-20, the minimum will rise to £10 – well below the minimum needed to survive right now.
Employers are already whingeing that the forthcoming rise – inadequate though it is – will stop them from hiring more workers.
But this is not necessarily true. A happier workforce is more productive, so it is likely that if employers raised pay to at least the living wage amount, they’ll get a better return on their investment. Research has shown this and it has been known for more than a decade.
In fairness, many employers pay more than the minimum wage and the living wage in any case.
