Is Louise Haigh’s resignation based on nothing more than a weak excuse?

We have woken up to a surprise departure from the Labour government but is Louise Haigh’s resignation based on nothing more than a weak excuse?

Apparently the press have seized on a conviction for misleading the police, that Haigh was given in 2013 when she was 24 years old. She had apparently been mugged, and listed a mobile phone belonging to her then-employer as one of the items taken, then found it in her house and did not report the discovery.

This seems incredibly minor – a spent conviction triggered by a mistake.

Here’s a Sky News report on the matter:

If Ms Haigh wanted an excuse to quit the government, it seems this was it.

Obviously This Writer cannot say whether she wanted out and this was her plan for doing so, but coming after so many Tory ministers toughed out much worse – and accurate – allegations against them, it seems an extremely weak reason to go.

The claim that she was causing a distraction from the work of a government that has only been in place for five months also seems extremely weak, as this is a story that only broke yesterday evening (Thursday, November 29, 2024); it hasn’t had time to become such a distraction.

And the weakness of the official government comment suggests some kind of stress within the Cabinet. If Keir Starmer is not particularly sorry to see her go, perhaps there is an underlying reason that she had to.
