Pring has trumped Stephen Timms by highlighting evidence of the DWP's violence. How will the minister respond?

Were DWP officials ‘only obeying orders’ that led to multiple deaths of claimants?

A debate has broken out over the level of engagement with government policy by civil servants at the Department for Work and Pensions.

Sir Stephen Timms, now minister for social security and disability, says he has never seen evidence of a “conspiracy” among DWP staff to take decisions leading to the deaths of hundreds – or thousands – of benefit claimants, or of efforts to hide what happened.

But John Pring of Disability News Service says the deaths of disabled claimants, particularly over the last 15 years, were not the sole responsibility of (Conservative) government ministers but were largely the result of “slow bureaucratic violence” that has developed within this “toxic” government department.

To This Writer, it is reminiscent of the “Nuremberg Defence” used by German soldiers to justify war crimes during World War Two – that they were “only following orders”.
