Kemi Badenoch shrugs as she promises to end the UK's Net Zero commitments and plunder the North Sea, in order to steal fossil fuel money back from Reform UK.

Conservatives’ Net Zero betrayal: Badenoch sells out the planet to fossil fuel lobby

The Conservative Party has finally stopped pretending it cares about the environment.

Leader Kemi Badenoch has promised that, if elected, the Tories will suck every last drop of oil and gas out of the North Sea, scrap Net Zero targets, and tear up rules designed to stop fossil fuel giants from wrecking the planet.

This isn’t about “common sense.”

It isn’t about “growth.”

It’s about a lie – and a very obvious one.

The Big Con

Badenoch claims that “maximising extraction” will somehow lower bills and boost Britain’s energy security.

What absolute rubbish!

Government experts admit new drilling licences won’t cut bills by a single penny and won’t protect us from global price shocks.

Oil and gas are sold on international markets. Whether we drill it or not, we’ll still pay world prices.

So if it won’t lower bills, and it won’t make us secure, who does benefit?

Answer: the fossil fuel companies who’ll pocket billions while the rest of us choke on the emissions.

Following Reform UK down the sewer

Why would Badenoch push something so destructive?

Simple: she’s chasing Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, who have been promising exactly the same thing.

Instead of standing up for the planet – or for ordinary people – she’s trying to buy loyalty from oil and gas donors away from Nigel Farage’s party in order to undermine its financial base (the fossil fuel giants provide 92 per cent of Reform UK’s funding).

This is not leadership – it’s cynicism, plain and simple.

The Tories are lying about Net Zero

Badenoch whines that net zero by 2050 is “impossible” – another lie.

Successive governments, experts, and even the UK’s own Climate Change Committee have said it is achievable – if politicians have the guts to invest in renewable energy, insulation, and green jobs.

But instead of facing reality, Badenoch is torching what progress has been made, handing control to corporations and hoping you won’t notice the planet burning around you.

The deadly consequences

2024 was the hottest year on record.

The world has already breached the 1.5°C danger line set in the Paris Agreement.

But the UK has signed up – in law – to do its part.

What message does it send if we now rip that up and say: “Forget the climate, let’s burn everything we can”?

It gives cover to climate criminals everywhere – from Trump in the US to dictators who’ll gleefully point to us and say: “If they won’t stick to their promises, why should we?”

Vox Political‘s Verdict

This is not a policy.

It is not a plan.

It is a suicide note for the planet, written by a party so desperate for donations and votes that it is willing to sacrifice our children’s future.

The Tories are lying to you.

  • They don’t care about your bills.
  • They don’t care about your jobs.
  • They don’t care about your future.

They care about getting their grubby hands on fossil fuel money – even if it means condemning us all.
