Angela Rayner has resigned from her roles as Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary.
The decision has come after Parliament’s ethics advisor Sir Laurie Magnus investigated her underpayment of stamp duty on an £800,000 flat in Hove.
Sir Laurie concluded that Rayner had breached ministerial standards by failing to pay around £40,000 in stamp duty after misclassifying the property as her main residence.
Rayner has stated that she acted in good faith, relying on legal advice at the time of the transaction.
But the conveyancing firm she engaged has denied providing tax advice, stating that it calculated the stamp duty based solely on information provided by Rayner, using HMRC’s online tool.
The controversy has intensified after graffiti labelling her as a “tax evader” appeared outside her property.
It seems she has also resigned as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, triggering an election.
The resignation has raised questions about ministerial accountability and the Labour Party’s commitment to ethical standards.
