Michael Portillo attacks the Tories: ‘They have nothing to say’ | Political Scrapbook
Former MP Michael Portillo launched into a blistering attack on the Tory government last night on BBC This Week, saying it was “in paralysis” and had “nothing to say”.
The context: the sparse and bland Queen’s Speech.
He told Andrew Neil:
“And now it comes forward with this Queen’s Speech. After 23 years of careful thought about what they would like to do in power, and the answer is nothing.
“There is nothing they want to do with office or power. The government is in total paralysis, because the only thing that matters to the government now is the saving of the Prime Mininster’s career.
“And the saving of the Prime Minister’s career is dependent only on one thing, which is winning the Referendum for the Remain campaign, and that majority that he secured last year – it’s all for nothing.
“The government has nothing to do, nothing to say and thinks nothing.”

Ciertamente he apreciado esta respuesta de un hombre al que admiro.
Good on you Michael, never truer words, he missed out their hatred towards the sick and the poor, that’s still in full swing and getting worse.
Portillo was never against the hatred towards the plebs, minions or useless eaters, which is why that goes unremarked as the only thing the Tories are now interested in.
The current govt have been busy implementing a hollow economic policy of neo liberalism. This is why they are silent because they have already put in place all they need to demolish the welfare state. They are now just sitting and watching the incoming tide of money being funneled up to them from the poor and the needy, even the middle classes, and the selling of infrastructure, and the profits we are paying to rent it back. One thing that is not well understood by the general population is the fact that the current implementation of the neo lib economic model is that it produces nothing and yet consumes all, and what it call “wealth production” is nothing more than harvesting the value from everything the real wealth the current and preceding generations have produced, like housing, schools, and roads, and the NHS.
The only interaction we now have with the system is our ability to spend money, and they are terrified that the wider population will understand this, and begin to take action. Our entire relationship with their state and society is being reduced to finacialised transactions. We no longer exist as people.
There is a small but growing protest aimed at demonstrating that we have understood the power we have – the power to destroy their system simply by not spending money. One day a month will be declared Financial Disobedience Day, when it is hoped every one will withhold their money especially from the major businesses and retailers, and from anything that has duty and VAT. I think they have a face book page. The sub-title of the protest is “the Silence of the Tills”, as a demonstration that people understand what the aim of neo liberalism is, a flex of the muscle, and to to show that the people understand that the next stage is our “slaughter”, the creation of millions who have no money to participate in the economy, through the shrinkage of the state, who will be abandoned as an underclass. It was apparently designed originally from the observation that many people can’t take part in marches and protests through health or wealth issues, or caring responsibility. The protest is the most inclusive so far devised, and by boycotting retailers to ensure it is reported, unlike demos now.
Absolutely true. I am not a great admirer of Portillo the politician but as a TV narrator he is one of the few that can talk to camera and to people without coming across as pompous and full of his own importance. The very antithesis of Cameron & Co. Probably why his political career nosedived. His suggestion that the current bunch of misfits crave power then do not have a strategy for exercising it is true in that it has had to make so many policy U-turns that its credibility is shattered. Vive Le Cameron will be their eventual undoing. Can’t wait!
Do they actually have nothing to say, or is it that their doings are so shameful that they conduct them in silence? They’re not that different from that awful government in which Portillo served. He’s good tv presenter, though!
