Here’s why student grants have been replaced by loans
Just in case you had forgotten how nasty the Conservative Party really is, George Osborne’s plan to put poor people who are intelligent into a lifetime of debt went into operation yesterday.
The plan was pushed through Parliament in January – not with a democratic vote of all MPs, but by a legislation committee.
This Blog described it at the time as “another Tory attack on democracy, on the poor, on aspiration and on choice”.
Students starting university courses in England will no longer be able to apply for grants towards living costs.
Under changes that came into effect on Monday, grants for students from low-income homes are replaced by loans.
Previously, students from families with annual incomes of £25,000 or less received a full grant of £3,387 a year.
The National Union of Students said the move was “disgraceful” and meant poorer students would be saddled with a lifetime of debt.
The switch from grants to maintenance loans was announced in July 2015 by the then Chancellor, George Osborne, in his Budget.

Is it fair to say you can basically look at the differences between the USA and the UK, and in effect see how the differences will be eradicated in time? Especially with healthcare and education. Workers rights too.
And another one passed over from the US
It’s Eugenics poorer students will now be put of Uni also less likely to start a family with most jobs being min wage rents so high buying a home near impossible. Those that do gamble go to Uni saddle themselves with huge debts, struggle to find a job that pays enough to repay the uni debt, maybe just afford rent but little chance of buying a home less chance of starting a family. This leaves those from a more well off background in a much better position to be able to do all the things the poorer student will not, including having a family. I used to think people who wrote about Eugenics and this Govt were of their trolley, not anymore.
What the government is saying is we live in a capitalist system. This is not a socialist system. Therefore, close or cut all government social prograns. Dont depend on the government for any assistance. It is i got mine and you get yours if you can get it. Make it on your own if you can. If you cannot make it on your own, we dont need you.
And do you think that is in any way fair?
I would suggest that what this government is saying is that they don’t want poorer working class people getting a good education at all because that would empower them, and they don’t want that. This government wants to go back to the days when only the wealthy elite, however intelligent they may or may not be, could buy a University Education.
Democratic capitalism is about greed. It is about profit over people. It is about selfishness. It is about i got mine you get yours if you can get it. It is about the rich getting richer on the back of the working poor and on the back of a destroyed environment with climate change and global warming. It is all about the rich versus the poor the uneducated the needy the disabled the retired the sick and the vulnerable. It is all about the money.
