Child abuse inquiry slips over the line into farce as former head accused of racism
We hear vague noises from official sources that it’s all going fine and they’re “making real progress” but all we see are three failed leaders, a bizarre claim that the inquiry shouldn’t look at historical abuse – it’s raison d’etre! – and now claims of racism.
If the whole endeavour could be compared to a ship, it would be rudderless and sinking – taking down a huge number of betrayed abuse victims with it.
The lack of enthusiasm isn’t merely disgraceful – it is infuriating.
Everybody involved should be punished in the severest way for wasting everybody’s time and dashing the hopes of victims in such an apathetic manner.
Were these people told to be unprofessional and lackadaisical or does it just come naturally?
MPs are to question the head of the troubled inquiry into allegations of institutional child abuse, Prof Alexis Jay, over allegations that her predecessor Dame Lowell Goddard made racist remarks and acted aggressively.
Goddard, a New Zealand judge, has rejected claims in the Times that officials warned her about offensive remarks, including a claim that she said high rates of child abuse in the UK were “because it has so many Asian men”.
In a statement issued on Friday, Goddard said the accusations were false and malicious.
The home affairs select committee will raise the claims next Tuesday when it questions Jay – who has been involved in the inquiry since it was set up.
