“Trump and Theresa new best friends,” tweeted Diane Abbot. “Be afraid world. Be very afraid.”

We live in astonishing times. For example, This Writer is about to praise Laura Kuenssberg, of all people, for putting Herr President Drumpf (and appeaser-in-chief Theresa ‘Chamberlain’ Mayfly) on the spot about some of the new president’s policies.

“Prime Minister, you’ve talked about where you agree, but you’ve also said you’d be frank where you disagree with the President,” Kuenssberg said, before going on to press Prime Minister May on that point and also – very bluntly – quiz President Trump on some of the pledges made since his inauguration last week.

“Mr President, you’ve said before that torture works, you’ve praised Russia, you’ve said you want to ban some Muslims from coming to America, you’ve said there should be punishment for abortion,” Kuenssberg continued.

“For many people in Britain, those sound like alarming beliefs. What do you say to our viewers at home who are worried about some of your views and worried about you becoming the leader of the free world.”

It is astonishing that, during a diplomatic visit when our leaders are expected to talk frankly about the major issues facing their nations, it fell to a news reporter to actually mention what those issues were – doubly so when the reporter doing this was La Kuenssberg, who now seems to be a former Tory cheerleader.

Mrs May attracted a huge amount of flak over the fact that Herr Drumpf had spoken in favour of allowing waterboarding – a particularly nasty torture tactic – and that she had no objection to it:

It meant any comments she tried to make about justice were pointless; clearly she does not have time for it:

Of course, the grovelling Mrs May had her supporters too – just not many, and their comments were shot down with ease. For example:

It was pretty clear that May was going to go begging ever since her utterly woeful Brexit speech admitted that she’s pinning our national hopes on some kind of free trade deal with Donald Trump, but the fact that Mexico decided to stand up to Trump’s bullying while she was there are just goes to show what an utterly desperate position we’re in.

After drivelling on for ages Theresa May finally got to the point; begging for a Trump-Tory trade deal. She is absolutely determined to paint such a trade deal as a great thing for ordinary working people, but it’s such obvious propaganda bullshit that only the most delusional could ever fall for it.

Theresa May’s pathetic pleading that this new Trump-Tory trade deal should “work for both sides and serve both our national interests” contrasts very sharply indeed with Donald Trump’s protectionist inaugural speech full of “America First” rhetoric and promises to rig all trade deals and foreign policy objectives in favour of America.

Theresa May knows just as well as anyone else that Britain is always going to be the junior partner in any dealing with the United States, but especially now that we’ve put ourselves in such a position of geopolitical weakness.

Trump knows that we need him more than he needs us, so he’ll use the negotiations to demand tribute. Opening up the UK market to heavily subsidised US agricultural produce including GM foods and chlorine washed chicken is almost certain to be one demand. The carving open of the NHS to be picked apart by US health corporations will almost certainly be another.
