The NHS squeeze that the Tories want you to forget

Last Updated: May 8, 2017By

Thanks to This Writer’s relative Tanya*, in Bristol, for the link to the Junior Doctor Blog’s excellent film about the NHS under the current government.

The clip is 10 minutes long, but the part I want to emphasize today examines the NHS budget as a proportion of the UK’s GDP – the amount of money the country makes every year.

Currently, 8.8 per cent of GDP is spent on the NHS – and this is not adequate, according to experts.

But the Conservative Party wants to squeeze it down to 6.7 per cent of GDP by 2020. This is why your health service is in danger of collapsing.

It isn’t incompetence by managers.

It isn’t laziness or greed-motivated strikes by doctors and nurses.

It is cash starvation by a government that should be providing more each year to cope with growing demand, but isn’t – even though ministers claim they are.

Guess what? They have been lying to you for years.

And remember: The actual amount of money represented by 6.7 per cent of GDP is likely to shrink under a Conservative government, as Tories don’t have the sense to invest in the economy – they have been starving it for seven years.

Here’s the full video clip. At 10 minutes it might seem a little long for modern attention spans, but please stick with it as it is well worth it:

You know what to do. If you don’t want the Tories to succeed in what is clearly a plan to ruin the NHS, vote Labour on June 8.

*I think we’re second cousins, but don’t quote me on that.
