Mark Steel nails the real reasons for Tory austerity

Last Updated: May 14, 2017By

An advert for an anti-austerity demonstration, projected onto the side of the Palace of Westminster.

This valuable reminder is from an edition of BBC Question Time a while ago, after the Tories had conducted one of their silly spending reviews, decided the poor were to blame for everything, and were planning to cut more public services (like fire stations and swimming pools) as a result.

Mark Steel puts blame back where it belongs – with the bankers, and with the Tory ministers who let them off the hook and set different parts of society against each other in their classic “divide and rule” strategy:

Apparently there was an old 18th/19th century saying which went something like this, “Tories create and foster divisions within society in order to keep power and wealth in the hands of the aristocratic and monied classes”. Today, in the 21st century nothing whatever has changed one iota.

Why, och why do people still vote for them? It’s like saying that you don’t want to die yet signing your own death warrant! I just don’t understand.
