When Tories say they are ‘transforming lives’, they always mean ‘for the worse’

He also said the trashy so-called benefit – which is hugely over-budget, years behind schedule, is delayed by weeks before being applied to claimants and is mostly still worked out by hand after attempts to computerise it failed dismally (who does it benefit?) – was “making work pay”. Of course it isn’t.
Gauke himself is a nasty piece of work, as This Writer pointed out in a fairly recent article.
He is exactly the kind of Tory that new Labour MP Laura Pidcock said she would never befriend.
He has offered to meet her anyway. One imagines it will be a frosty event.
The work and pensions secretary has signalled that the government will press ahead with controversial welfare changes, insisting the system of universal credit is “making work pay and transforming lives”.
Responding to a letter signed by 30 Labour MPs and the Green co-leader Caroline Lucas, expressing concerns about UC and calling for its implementation to be paused, David Gauke underlined his commitment to the policy.
“Getting UC right is a priority for me,” he said. “UC is revolutionising the welfare system by making work pay and transforming lives. Those on UC are moving into work significantly faster and working longer than under the old system. Only through this balanced approach can we as a country provide effective and holistic support for families and individuals to enter the world of work while ensuring fairness for the taxpayer.”
He offers to meet Laura Pidcock, the lead signatory on the letter, and her colleagues when parliament returns from the summer recess next month to discuss their concerns.

When Tories use words like “Transforming” it reminds me of those letters from Banks, gas, electricity and water suppliers etc., which notify “Changes” to prices and fees. CHANGES, yeah, right. They never go down, always up, so why can’t they just be HONEST and use the word “INCREASES” ?! Gauke also used the cliche word “HOLISTIC”, like HELL the Tories even know the meaning of any word with more than one syllable!
Gauke is a particularly weird and nasty character, but of course he’s a Tory.

When he resigned from office Iain Duncan Smith left the Department for Work and Pensions in an almighty mess. He should be dragged back and made to clear up the mess that he has caused.
