Tory councillor expelled after BNP connections became public

Last Updated: May 22, 2018By

Stephen Goldsack.

Next time a Tory – like James Cleverly, perhaps – tries to suggest the Labour Party is the only one with a racism problem, remember this.

Stephen Goldsack states that he is not a racist, but it seems clear there is evidence to the contrary – including a former affiliation to the racist British National Party.

As a person who has faced false accusations of racism, This Writer is reluctant to assume guilt without having seen that evidence.

But what we have is enough to confirm that the Conservatives have their own issues to handle – before they can lecture Labour on race.

A Conservative councillor has been expelled from the party after prior ties to the BNP emerged.

The news comes just days after The National told how Stephen Goldsack has been reported to a watchdog over comments made regarding a planning application for a mosque.

He denied any wrongdoing, telling this newspaper: “There’s no way I‘m a racist, it’s complete nonsense.”

He was also given the full backing of Councillor Meghan Gallacher, who leads the Conservative group on North Lanarkshire Council and called on SNP rivals to withdraw their criticism and issue an apology.

But after photographic evidence of Goldsack’s prior allegiance to the BNP emerged yesterday, a spokesperson for the Tories told us: “Cllr Goldsack’s membership of the Scottish Conservative party has been rescinded, an action we took immediately after learning of this past affiliation.”
