Is the UK really about to give back the ancient artworks it stole?

Agreement has almost been reached so is the UK really about to give back the ancient artworks it stole? Apparently the clue is in what we’re calling them.

According to the BBC report, the Parthenon Sculptures could soon be winging their way back to Greece, the country from which they were taken more than 200 years ago.

It must be about to happen, because the name by which we’ve always known them previously – the Elgin Marbles – has been relegated to “also known as” in the article.

This Writer is quietly delighted, and may be more loudly so when the deal goes through – because I’m sick of the UK being – rightly – described as a nation of thieves.

I’m being told that when they were taken, the Parthenon was being used as an arsenal by the Turks, so it was receiving very little respect and everything in it was in danger of serious damage.

So for the sake of propriety, the UK could say, “We’ve looked after your heritage from a time when it was under threat, but now we think Greece should have it back.”

And the Greeks could, diplomatically, not accuse the UK of lying through its national teeth.
