Keir’s Christmas message to the public sector: work harder – wage slaves!
Now we know prime minister Keir’s Christmas message to the public sector: work harder – wage slaves!
His message is pretty much exactly the same as that of the Tory governments that came before him. He’s telling employees that if they work themselves to exhaustion chasing extra results that might not even be achievable, then he might consider giving them an above-inflation pay rise.
You’ll notice that he’s not even saying his government may do more to bring their pay back up to parity with what it was in 2010, before the Tories imposed real-terms cut after cut upon them.
MPs have always had that parity, of course; they decide their own pay.
Ebenezer Starmer [pictured] has said that government departments will have to fund future pay increases from their own budgets.
But this infers that they are run like businesses and can make profits. This is not true. And in any case, it is the government that sets departmental budgets every year; even if a department does make a profit, ministers and MPs can take it away from them without offering anything in return.
So the real message for public sector workers – the message behind the message, if you like, is simple:
Don’t run yourself ragged; you won’t get anything for your efforts.
