This corruption happens when the public rejects a politician but the prime minister doesn’t – and it is the reason Thangam Debbonaire has climbed onto the House of Lords gravy train.
She was Labour MP for Bristol West from 2015 to 2024 but when constituency boundaries changed and she had to seek election in the new Bristol Central seat, Debbonaire lost to the Greens’ Carla Denyer.
But that isn’t the end of her political career because Labour won the general election and new prime minister Keir Starmer decided to unilaterally reject the will of the people and put her in Parliament anyway.
So instead of being on the £98.50 per week’s Universal Credit that she should be getting, Debbonaire will receive a publicly-funded attendance allowance of £361 per day.
Starmer just said the benefits system is “unfair” and “indefensible” and it is – they way he applies it to his own cronies.
