This is why the Tory bingo poster isn’t just funny – it’s downright creepy:

Notice that the people are all “them” and “they” in Orwell’s novel, as well as the Tory poster.

Just finished reading 1984. I suggest everyone does just to remind ourselves of how very close we are.

My take is that Winston was prepared to do anything to defeat big brother. Even commit murder etc. So in the torture in the palace of love he was played the recording of him saying that for them to prove he was not morally superior to them. So, to sort this mess and stop it we have to go to a higher level of consciousness and not down to their level of violence.

So as others have pointed out the only way to defeat them is through unconditional love, empathy, joy, peace, compassion and loving-kindness. All the qualities they are sorely lacking.

And we need to start today.

    Love

      You’re a bit of a hippy, aren’t you? ;-)
While I would agree with that to a certain degree – we should certainly have compassion for everyone who has been harmed by the current cycle of violence against the poor – I would not extend it to the Tories or Tory Democrats. If you don’t want to give them aggression, give them nothing.

In many ways, Mike, it’s simply the Tories reading from the script they developed way back in the 19th century. Gladstone, remember, declared that he had lost an election to them ‘in a torrent of cheap gin’ as the Tories attacked the Liberals over the imposition of public licensing laws or closing hours. Back in 1985, Maggie also extended pub opening hours by a half-hour to 11 O’ clock. As for Bingo, it was the Tories in the 1950s/60s who allowed licensed betting shops to appear on the high street. All this is to divert the masses from realising that their freedoms and rights are being stripped away, and they’re actually being left poorer than before. It’s almost ‘panem et circenses’, bread and circuses, but the bread is being reduced and the circuses are provided by Rupert Murdoch.

With the Selfservatives being so keen on caps, if only George (hard working families) Osbourne had thought to take a penny off the price of cloth caps, then they would’ve had the next election sewn up.
