Elite goes tinfoil over Momentum | Paul Mason

Journalist and broadcaster Paul Mason demolishes the current right-wing attack on Jeremy Corbyn support organisation Momentum.

In the past two days there’s been a clear, programmed switch of emphasis in the Labour right’s campaign against Jeremy Corbyn.

They have switched from attacking Corbyn himself to attacking Momentum, the grassroots campaign set up by his supporters after he won last time, and which forms the backbone of his leadership campaign now.

A Times story, based on an offical-looking but anonymous dossier about Momentum’s activities in Liverpool, forms the centrepiece. Two pre-scheduled TV “investigations” are to follow.

The Liverpool dossier has been compiled by someone — believed to be local Labour officials — using undercover surveillance methods to infiltrate Google and Facebook groups Momentum uses.

The dossier follows the usual, Zinoviev letter-style method used in all red-baiting: to build the case that Momentum is, instead of an 18,000+ strong movement of Labour activists, a alien force originating outside the party.

The previous allegation — that Momentum was infiltrated by the far left — has been superseded by the idea that the group itself, in its entirety, is an “entryist” formation.

The allegation is ludicrous.

My God but they’re so desperate. I’m for JC. Let them look as I don’t see a problem except that the ‘anonymous’ bit is questionable.

The rightwing must be getting very very desperate and momentum will not be the last in a long string that they stick the knife in I for one will stick with Jeremy Corbyn and John Mc

This doesn’t surprise me. I went to Labour First meetings locally where the same dozen people turned out to applaud words of condemnation for Corbyn but nothing of any substance. When they asked me if I would like to join, I declined and did not return. The same thing with the other group who had even fewer attendees. Then I went to a momentum meeting and there were 50 people, lots of really good discussion, then I attended another meeting of momentum in a different location and didn’t recognize any of the attendees and I joined. The reason I joined momentum with a capital M was because they were actually promoting policy and discussion with more than just a handful of the local idiots.(Staring dumbly and rapturously while someone blathers on about nothing useful is hardly engaging discourse – hence the term “local idiots” – sorry if that seems judgmental but I really was looking for something more than vague, wrong assumptions abdicating meaningful thinking)
    Signed – superbitch?

Are they pretending to be scared this lot will somehow outvote the 1/2mil other new members? I thought we were supposed to be a ‘Broad Church’ offering an umbrella for all?
