The real reason Frank Field won’t trigger a by-election any time soon
He may have resigned the Labour whip, but Frank Field won’t be giving his constituents the luxury of a by-election – no matter what his partner-in-propping-up-the-Tories, Kate Hoey, says.
Responding to a claim by Owen Jones that Mr Field chose to sit as an independent because his constituency party wanted him deselected after he helped save Theresa May’s government in a crucial Brexit vote, Ms Hoey – who supported the Tories alongside Mr Field – said he would be re-elected easily because his constituents support him:
AND if he stands as independent Labour he will be re -elected easily. His constituents support him https://t.co/7TPsEK1vSx

But the facts are against her. As Tom Clark of Another Angry Voice points out – it didn’t work out very well for Simon Danczuk when he tried:
The reason that Labour right-wingers like John Woodcock and Frank Field refuse to call by-elections when they quit/resign the Labour whip is that they know perfectly well what happened to Simon Danczuk when he stood against Labour as an independent MP. pic.twitter.com/xTSzmXw1dI

People vote for Labour candidates because they support Labour policies. They don’t support people who betray those policies. That is why Mr Field’s constituency party turned against him – and it why the constituents of Birkenhead would turn against him too:
The idea that he could be an independent MP, not call a by election and remain a member of the labour party after having so blatently brought it into disrepute is ridiculous. His constituents need to have a say did the vote for the man or the manifesto. #WeStandWithCorbyn #JC4PM

And of course, if Ms Hoey is so sure of herself, why doesn’t she try it? Her own constituency party called for the withdrawal of the Labour whip and her deselection as a Labour MP in a vote of ‘no confidence’ after she voted to support Tory Brexit.
We know why:
Democracy is not what @KateHoeyMP Is about she dare not stand for independent her Constituents cant wait to see the back of her

“Talk is cheap. Judge these people by what they say – not what they do.” – this should be the other way round, surely?
Thanks for spotting that. It’s what I get for working so very late.
