Don’t believe the Tory propaganda – the ‘National Living Wage’ rise is leaving people WORSE-OFF

Big announcement from the Treasury today:

But is it really such a great thing?

That means people on the so-called National Living Wage are earning £1,540 per year less than they would need to break even in the current economic climate.

It means they still have to claim benefits, which means (in turn) that the National Living Wage is no such thing.

(But we knew that already.)

What’s the solution? Here it is:

And of course, every person on Universal Credit will see their benefit withdrawn at 63p for every pound they gain in increased minimum wage. Thus some one on 30 hrs a week minimum wage will get £11.40 extra wage in a week compared to last week, but will lose £7.18 in UC. Assuming they’ve been able to claim it of course!

I got £12 an hour as a private cleaner with holiday pay and sickness pay, as I was well regarded by my employers in 2004. Nmw should be £14 outside London, and £20 in London.

Businesses shouldn’t pass costs onto staff by paying them less. If they told the bank they’re not getting their full charges, or the landlord he’s not getting his full rent, or the council their full rates, lawyers their full fees or suppliers their full bill they’d be run out of business. Staff pay is a business cost that needs to be met like every other cost.

Labour don’t just need to ban zero hour contracts, they need to ban timewasting agencies and all the other rotten employment practices that have sprung up in recent years.

I thought I had a job interview today. Turned up right place, right time, couldn’t get into the office because the entryphone either didn’t work or was being ignored and only got in at all because someone else was coming out. Then I was handed a form to fill in – which I’d half expected – but when that was done I was sent away without seeing anyone! Apparently they’ll be in touch, but why couldn’t they just email the form out in the first place? Why did I have to waste an afternoon and half a gallon of petrol just to fill out a form? Because lousy bosses like these know they have the upper hand.

Until there’s a true living wage factoring in hours, pay, AND job security for everyone, while also being real inflation adjusted, there’s no such thing.
