Need a miracle: In fact, this person needs a change of government to one that doesn’t tax poverty.

The Conservatives in government have created a huge amount of poverty – and then taxed it.

People don’t talk about it in that way but it is exactly what they have done.

Benefit cuts and freezes increase the financial burden on the poor and disadvantaged while the money they would have received stays in the Treasury. They are taxes on poverty.

Citizens Advice, in its manifesto for the general election, has called for the new government – whoever leads it – to end the benefit freeze (immediately – not in April next year as the Tories have claimed they’ll do) and increase working-age benefits.

Both measures are desperately-needed.

Only last month we learned what lifting the benefit freeze will mean: Families on £500 a month Universal Credit will receive a rise of £8.50 per month. Gosh.

They’ll still be receiving a massive £580 less than if the benefit freeze had not been imposed.

That’s right:

The benefit freeze has more than halved claimants’ income.

It is a tax on poverty.

In the fifth-largest world economy, that is a scandal – and there’s only one solution: a Labour government.
