Don’t get your hopes up over Johnson’s ‘rape clause’ admission

Boris Johnson: he’ll say what people want to hear – but he’ll only act if he feels like it.

Okay, Boris Johnson has admitted that the ‘rape clause’ for Universal Credit claimants is an “injustice” and promised to do “everything we can to rectify it”.

But please remember that any instruction on this will go to the Department for Work and Pensions.

And we know that, to the DWP, “everything we can to rectify” an “unjustice” means it will do nothing at all.

The ‘rape clause’ demands that anybody who wishes to claim the child payments under Universal Credit for more than two children must prove that the further offspring were born of either rape or a “controlling or coercive” relationship.

They have to fill out a long form that forces them to relive their ordeal.

So far, Tory DWP ministers have been entirely comfortable with this – and unsympathetic with the rape victims they are brutalising – totalling more than 500 mothers so far.

Do not expect this to change just because a liar says the easy thing in public.

“everything we can to rectify it”.

He could simply repeal it if he wanted to (which he clearly does not).
