We die of Covid-19 because we’re old and fat, says Coffey. Why hasn’t SHE caught it, then?
No doubt This Writer will catch some more flak for this. I had criticism for “body shaming” Therese Coffey in the past. But these are her own words (or as near to them as makes no odds)!
The Work and Pensions Secretary was doing the morning media round today (Monday, January 25) and happened to mention on Good Morning Britain her belief that people who die of Covid-19 tend to be elderly and obese.
This theory is certain borne out by the example she provided later, when she reminded us all that Boris Johnson had spent time in intensive care last spring. He is certainly fat and old.
But when presenter Piers Morgan challenged her, asking her to clarify that she was saying the UK has the highest Covid-19-related death rate because its population is fat and old, she described her own words as offensive, made an excuse and flounced off (which is easy to do when you’re at home and can cut your connection).
See for yourself:

The exchange has provoked a certain amount of festivity among the general public:
Therese Coffey just (virtually) walked off a @GMB interview after saying that the age of our population and obesity are the reasons that we have the highest death rate because @piersmorgan said "are you saying we're too old and too fat?"

Therese Coffey says the words she has just had repeated back to her are insulting.
She said them!

But we must remember that Ms Coffey is a woman of… particular talents. Intelligence is not one of them.
Consider this one-liner from the same GMB interview. Peter Stefanovic’s sarcasm is right on the button:
Thank goodness for intellectual giants like Therese Coffey in Government https://t.co/Glcmab6RsD

I have no wish to defend the woman but your headline suggests that she said the people DIE from CoViD-19, because they are old and fat. We know that age is the single greatest determinant, when it comes to morbidity. Obesity also puts you at increased risk of death, should you contract the virus and develop the disease. Your headline implies that you catch the virus, because you are old and fat. There may be many reasons why she hasn’t caught it and none of them to do with her age, or adiposity however should she catch it, if she were to die, those things may well be the cause.
Having observed the clip, I think that what she said is being given short shrift. Her greater crime, in this instance, was they way in which she left but I saw nothing wring in what she said, given what we know. If we knew the statistics of those who died, in relation to age and obesity, we would know how much of an impact those things had had. sadly, we don’t, we just have what scientists have told us, regarding these.
In the last few days, I have read about gatherings of hundreds of people. These people will go home to other people and they will meet others. This is how the virus spreads and sadly, those who are most vulnerable to it, will likely succumb. Until and unless people change their behaviour, this will continue and our death toll will remain high.
