Why is JEREMY HUNT doing more to demand help for working people to self-isolate than KEIR STARMER?
Read this:
Where has “a new leadership” got Labour? Jeremy Hunt, yes that Jeremy Hunt is making the case for proper financial support for people to self isolate. Jeremy *****g Hunt arguing for protections for workers not the Labour Party! https://t.co/tkEPrkeQeg

The point is well made. Hunt has written a Twitter thread explaining the problem as he sees it, while Starmer has been sitting at home – self-isolating for a third time because he can afford it! – on his thumbs.
Here’s what Hunt said:
6.3 million have had their first jab, infections are down 22% (7 day avg) & hospital patients 4% below Jan 18 peak. So why should we be cautious? https://t.co/hpX1wFZ4IY

Whilst the new strains are unlikely to render the vaccine ineffective, they may reduce its efficiency at keeping people out of hospitals. Because viruses are good at mutating, sooner or later there may well be a strain that is fully immune to the vaccine (not necessarily soon).

Or in absolute numbers, if Cab Office survey is accurate & translated onto the latest T&T data, last week around 427,000 people who were asked to self isolate did not & 85,000 of them went to work. That’s a LOT of people spreading a dangerous infection. https://t.co/doj4GjFXNo

1. Guaranteeing salary backfill for those who lose wages as a result of self-isolating. Expensive…but loss of earnings seems to be the biggest cause of non-compliance and the overall cost is much cheaper than another lockdown.

3. Equipping and funding local councils to monitor compliance – as this cannot possibly be done from national call-centres.

He’s not wrong, is he?
And he’s winning a lot of praise for it.
But, good as his points are, there’s an answer that trumps them.
It refers to the reason people can’t afford to self-isolate as matters stand at the moment.
Here it is:

CONSERVATIVE GOVERMENT

It’s true. And we must remember that Jeremy Hunt was the Health Secretary at the time of Operation Cygnus, which demonstrated that the NHS would be overwhelmed if a pandemic infection happened – and he did absolutely nothing to rectify the situation.
So, while it is welcome that he is tinkering around the edges of it, we should remember that Hunt helped cause the wider problem in the first place.

Boris is about to get the boot. Hunt is lining himself up to take over. Tories will say anything to get into power – but once they have that power they revert. Don’t forget the damage this man did to the NHS.
