Should MPs get medals and bigger payoffs when they leave Parliament?
MPs leaving Parliament should be awarded with medals and a more generous redundancy payment in order to help them move into other jobs, according to a committee… of MPs.
The claim is that some MPs face “financial challenges and hardship” after leaving Parliament, with the average loss-of-office payment being far less than in comparable countries.
That’s all very well – but MPs are already paid much more than the average UK wage. Many of them have second (or multiple) jobs as well. And of course we know of infamous instances when MPs also used their positions to corruptly feather their nests.
The issue was discussed on the BBC’s Politics Live show:
Watching the clip, though, do you think the panel got to the heart of the matter? Or did they avoid the more difficult points?
This Writer certainly thought there was more to it, as my tweeted commentary bears witness:
Ha ha! MPs should get medals and bigger payoffs when they lose their seats – according to a cross-party group… of MPs! What a gang of grasping crawlers! Don't they take enough from the public as it is? Their salaries are THREE TIMES the national average! #PoliticsLive

How do you attract the best people to stand for Parliament? Difficult question, @kezdugdale – certainly not through the party political system that favours yes-people for the current leaders of the parties.

Perhaps MPs should get performance-related pay? They should be paid on how much they've done to improve living standards, raise pay, lower bills, cut crime and defend the nation? That sort of thing? Trouble is, then none of them would be paid at all! #PoliticsLive

At the last count £250,000 is wasted every year on Police Long Service medals. Puerile nonsense.
Definately not! Most should be arrested and receive jail terms instead. Most MPs serve themselves and those that bribe…..er, I mean back them, than serve Britain and the British people!
Don’t you love these so-called committees award hmm does the person who puts in years working for a company get a golden hand shake nah more like a boot up the backside telling them times are hard so MPs can find this attitude when they leave a boot up the backside
Surely the MPs can “sign on” when they loose their seat. Perhaps then there would be a better understanding of how Universal
Credit works…or not works?
Aye, you can just picture it, as Johnson kneels before KCIII to get the latest medal for services to lying. That said, there’s quite a few of them will certainly never need money again, not with the £700 billion floating around from King Liar’s watch. There’s dozens of them who should rightly be rewarded with gaol.
Anyone remember six jobs George? Can politicians ever be satisfied earning a meagre £85k along with their eyewatering expenses, plus donations from mega-wealthy individuals, corporations and foreign states in return for what?
Parliament really has become totally engrossed in corruption and greed, as our country trickles out of Westminster’s cesspit overflow, or sometimes even, with a full unregulated flush.
