First female Commons Speaker dies. Is this the best comment on her?
This Writer is saddened to learn of the death of first female Speaker of the House of Commons, Betty Boothroyd, at the age of 93.
She was also the first Speaker I can remember who became a media personality in her own right – not only because she was a woman but because she was a former Tiller girl (it was a famous dance troupe, back in the day).
The best comment I’ve seen on her passing is this:
Goodbye Betty Boothroyd, the working class lass from Yorkshire who kept all those bellend public schoolboys in their place. pic.twitter.com/PBmtGUx3Zw

It puts the official word from current speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle in the shade:
I’m very saddened to hear of the passing of my friend the Rt Hon. Betty Boothroyd, Speaker of the House of Commons 1992 – 2000.
I’d like to offer my heartfelt condolences, on behalf of the House, to Betty's family and loved ones. pic.twitter.com/N0wN8Ssccb

Will we see her like again? Definitely.
But with people like Hoyle around, and politicians like Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer, it seems unlikely that they’ll turn up for a long, long time.

She was an absolute star, and I have often wondered how different things would have been in the HoC had she still been the Speaker. As ‘Helen the Zen’ indicates I am sure she would have not have allowed some of the outrageous behaviour we have seen over the past years. Hoyle isn’t fit to lick her boots.
Betty Boothroyd denmonstrated how a real politician should act and she did not permit any ‘nonsense’ from the little public schoolboys currently sitting in Parliament!
Current Speaker of House of Commons is just another lackey of the fascist tories and he is so weak it is pathetic! RIP Baroness Boothroyd and oh we plebs so need a real female politician who is not afraid to state the facts and work for us voters not the greedy fascist tory donors!
