Tory Andrew Bowie lies about recorded crime
Did you hear the Big Lie on the BBC’s Question Time last night (March23)?
Tory Andrew Bowie, asked to discuss the report showing that trust in the Metropolitan Police is at an all-time low because it is institutionally racist, misogynistic and homophobic, said crime has been halved between 2010 (when the Tories slimed their way back into government) and now.
If you missed it, here it is:
The facts demonstrate almost the exact opposite:
Tory MP Andrew Bowie claimed on #bbcqt that "from 2010 to 2023 there has been a 50% drop in recorded crime across the country".
The evidence does not support this claim.
Why are so many @Conservatives entirely comfortable with telling easily disprovable barefaced lies?#bbcqt pic.twitter.com/ERtPtpP1qp

Here are the figures:
The change from 4,150,916 crimes in the 2010-11 financial year (remember the Tories came to office in May 2010) to 6,300,968 by March 2022 is an increase – a rise – of more than 51 per cent.
He must have known he would be asked about the police and crime; he must have been briefed on these figures.
So he must have known he was spouting falsehoods. Right?

Of course he lied….He is a tory!
Over 30 years ago the then Met Police Commissioner stated following a complaint that there was absolutely no institutional racism in the Metropolitan Police? That’s a long time to live with that accusation?
The statistics are always false because Senior Officers believe a reported crime should be manipulated so it is classified as “No Crime”.
When I was in charge of the Beat Crime Office at West End Central I was constantly pressurised into persuading investigators to find any excuse to record a crime as “No Crime”,
During my time the numbers of solved crimes and arrests increased but this did not satisfy the powers to be. The answer? I was replaced by another Sergeant who would play to the tune that senior officers wanted to hear.
The reason Tories continue to spout so many lies especially on prime time TV and in national newspapers is because the coverage is massive. Whereas the repudiation and outing of these lies is only heard in minimal coverage on a very small comparative scale. A prime example being, a lie told on the front cover of a national newspaper in large 50 font, even when proved to be a lie in court, the apology is allowed to be printed on the back page at of the paper. which no one looks at, in 2 font. How is that fair or just?
