Politicians want people with Long Covid to work. Is it another cull of the sick?
Politicians in both main political parties want to push sick people back into work – but isn’t that an indictment of the UK’s political response to Long Covid?
Let me explain, with the help of Samuel Miller:
According to a study by the Universities of Portsmouth and Southampton, published in Applied Economics Letters, it is estimated that **80,000 people** had left employment due to Long Covid by early March 2022.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed that one in 20 people in the UK who are neither employed nor seeking paid work are suffering from long Covid, with the figure more than doubling in the past year.

An estimated 100 million people worldwide are suffering from long Covid, and they don't deserve to be vilified by the BBC as workshy, especially since many governments flagrantly mishandled the pandemic, including the one headed by Boris Johnson.

You have to look behind the headlines, behind what the mouthpieces are uttering, in order to understand what they really mean.
Here’s an example:
"It seems to me what you are saying is you are going to be tougher on people who are currently on sickness benefits. Is that correct?"
Ashworth: "the word tougher brings with it all sorts of connitations.. we've got to reform the way in which our benefit assessment system works" pic.twitter.com/KyqvbZ1yLg

How about this now-deleted tweet from broadcaster Jeremy Vine?
This tweet from @JeremyVineOn5 has been deleted. But we have had no apology.
What should we do now?

It attracted a strong response:
Maybe you’d like to declare them fit for work, like the people in this document. READ IT ⬇️https://t.co/I9BZDgblbM
— Judy Hamilton (@secretspartacus) May 25, 2023
The document contains details of people who have died or committed suicide as a result of government mistreatment of their sickness benefit claims in attempts to force them back into work.

Report @theJeremyVine for the hatred he spews time to take him off social media @1kilroywashere @johnpringdns @mikecoulson48 @DPACSheffield @Dis_PPL_Protest @EllenClifford1 @drbobgill @SueJonesSays @blueannoyed @RandolphTrent https://t.co/9jSwR1DQbA— paula peters (@paulapeters2) May 25, 2023
I also pointed out that most people too ill to work HAVE worked previously, and that we are ALSO tax payers, who have paid for our own support over the years. We still pay other tax contributions out of work. VAT, for example, among other stealth taxes
— Revolution Breeze (@SueJonesSays) May 25, 2023
There’s a reason they’re deemed too sick to work, it’s because they’re too sick to work. It might happen to any taxpayer at any time, why else should we pay taxes?

Looking at the evidence, and based on my own experience of government policy over the last 20 years (Tory and Labour), This Writer is moved to ask:
Are we looking at the beginnings of another politically-motivated cull of the sick?
