Lyndsay Hoyle has triggered a wave of Islamophobia by politicians. Media stoke it
Here’s how politicians create hysteria from nothing – cheered on by the media.
There’s no evidence that people who support Palestine, or Muslims, or anyone is threatening MPs.
There’s no evidence that Islamists are dominating our streets.
But already this false claim is being used to fuel demands for a new clampdown on protest that could turn the UK into a draconian police state.
Read the following and then tell me if I’ve missed anything.
Wed: MPs under 'unprecedented' threat by pro-Palestine voters
Thurs: Robert Jenrick: Our streets are dominated by Islamist extremists
Fri: Lee Anderson: Islamists have got control of London and Sadiq Khan
The way Islamophobic rhetoric has ramped up so quickly is frightening https://t.co/lo3ZO4HxCl

I've worked with Sadiq Khan and the ideas that "Islamists have got control of him" is offensive bollocks. It also wouldn't have been said if he wasn't Muslim. It's a dog whistle and we should be better than this. https://t.co/Vrp2shi6HC

Dear @BBCNews, a few days ago a labour *candidate* was accused of antisemitism.
You covered it as your main story for days.
Yesterday, Lee Anderson, a conservative *MP*, gave a full on anti-islam rant on TV.
The story barely makes your website.
Why the different coverage? pic.twitter.com/ZkO5nk5gBi

“Islamists in charge of Britain now, says Suella Braverman”
Hold on, I thought it was the “woke trans activists”? https://t.co/GMyAArChTA

This is a very dangerous moment for British politics.
And also: a reminder of how the UK media that went after Corbyn over antisemitism is totally fine giving Liz Truss and Lee Anderson and Suella Braverman a total pass for their Islamophobic & fascist rhetoric & allies. https://t.co/jPLCbjjf6Y— Mehdi Hasan (@mehdirhasan) February 23, 2024
Islamophobia is completely out of control, being propagated by Parliamentarians, editors and journalists. It is resonant of the antisemitism of the 1920s and 30s. Terrifying.

Islamophobia is rampant in British society.
It's fanned by media outlets, it afflicts both main parties, and it has a significant constituency in British public opinion.
So those who kicked this episode off must have known this would happen, unless they're totally stupid.
