Brace yourself! After 45 years of ‘socially liberal, fiscally conservative’ governments, someone has finally come out with a brief account of what it means.
The Tories (and neoliberal ‘New Labour’ variants like Blairites and Starmerites) have conned voters into supporting them by claiming to be “socially liberal” (gay marriage is a good example of such a policy) but “fiscally conservative” (claiming to be careful with the public purse).
Here’s what it actually means. The video clip below was made in the United States for an American audience, but is just as relevant for the UK; just switch in some British leaders instead of the names of the US presidents and Bob’s your uncle. For example, David Cameron [pictured] could claim to be “socially liberal” but “fiscally conservative” and look how he ruined the UK:
