The UK’s support for Israel against Iran is faltering
The UK’s support for Israel against Iran is faltering: David Cameron was said to be in Israel today (Wednesday, April 17, 2024), pleading for that country not to retaliate after Iran launched a large-scale missile attack that was itself a response to Israel’s attack on its consulate in Syria.
Iran’s attack was intelligent; drones and cruise missiles were sent to attract the fire of Israel’s air defences – the so-called “Iron Dome” – and then ballistic missiles followed, targeting and hitting the airbase from which the strike on the consulate in Damascus was launched.
Not only did the strike achieve the retaliation against Israel’s airbase that Iran wanted, but it also identified locations of Israeli air defence facilities, for future reference.
Cameron appeared on UK television in order to denigrate Iran’s attack – but is it possible that the arguments put to him may have changed his mind?
Here’s what he said:

Of course, there would not have been civilian casualties because (as This Writer understands it) all the Iranian missiles targeted military facilities.
Indeed, the nature of the Iranian attack has been thoroughly analysed and found to be – mostly – not dangerous at all. Here’s an example:
If a foreign country had bombed an American embassy or consulate somewhere, what do you think the US would do in return?
What do you think it should do?
Probably more than purposely sending some slow, old drones and missiles in a way that you know can and will be intercepted.

Given the apparent nature of Iran’s response to Israel’s act of terrorism against it, it seems appropriate that Cameron should go there and call for restraint.
If Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu overreacts, then he may escalate tensions in the Middle East, causing a wider war that nobody else – particularly Western nations like the UK – wants to see or be drawn into.
The UK government is already in trouble over its support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza, with popularity ratings for Rishi Sunak’s Tories – and Keir Starmer’s Labour Party that supports him on this – plummeting.
Further aggression by Netanyahu’s regime in Israel could push public opinion so heavily against the government that it may be forced to withdraw support from that country altogether.
