Iran's response to Saturday's missile attack is a verbal dig at Israel

Israel’s ‘revenge’ attack on Iran was in name only – right?

An Israeli missile strike is said to have hit the Isfahan region of Iran – doing no apparent damage. So Israel’s ‘revenge’ attack on Iran was in name only – right?

According to the United States, the retaliation after Iran’s 300+ missile attack on Israel last Saturday, which was itself a retaliation after Israel bombed the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, on April 1, happened overnight between April 18 and 19.

It is not known what weapons were used or from what military base they were launched, with the US saying it was a single missile and Iran saying the attack involved small drones.

But no evidence of damage is being shown by Iran.

It is possible that Israel has listened to representations from UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron and US President Joe Biden and, rather than escalating hostilities with a large-scale and destructive attack, simply sent a message.

As Isfahan is home to significant Iranian military infrastructure, including a large airbase, a major missile production complex and several nuclear facilities, that message would appear to be: “We know where we can hit you, and we can hit you at any time.”

The attack has been widely criticised on the social media:

In fact, it seems a wise move that could succeed in preventing any escalation. Israel has sent its message and, having received it, Iran can still say publicly that no harm was done, and shrug it off.

So Israel’s ‘revenge’ attack on Iran was in name only – right?
