Will Starmer’s Tory/Labour hybrid party be better than the Tories on rent reform?
Rishi Sunak’s party is pathetic. But will Starmer’s Tory/Labour hybrid party be better than the Tories on rent reform?
Here’s the situation, more or less:
Long-awaited laws to improve life for renters have been watered down so much they will fail, Tories have been warned.
Campaigners have blasted ministers for backing down on their pledge to end no-fault evictions and making too many “damaging” concessions. Labour says a ban on these evictions is “collapsing under the weight of vested interests”.
Landlord MPs have come under fire for weakening the Renters Reform Bill.
But will Starmer’s Tory/Labour hybrid party be better than the Tories on rent reform?
NO.
Of course not. If Tories like Dan Poulter – whether they are themselves landlords or not – are defecting to Labour, then Labour is not sufficiently different from the Tories to have opposing policies.
And in any case, the Tory influence means alternative policies wouldn’t be supported at the vote.
It’s how the same people keep control. They may switch parties but the politics remains the same: right-wing, repressive and harmful.
